New Sprite Designs, and NPC Dialogue Changes and More (Guardians of RPG v1.02 Update)

Hello everyone!

It's Monday which means it's time for my weekly devlog. This week was primarily chill compared to most other months, and I would say that is mostly due to my weekly Goals not being as code-heavy as my previous weekly goals. Even so, I think I have something interesting to show you all for this week's update.

Weekly Goals

I gave myself just 2 goals to work on:

  • Fix NPC Naturalness
  • Create New Sprites for Chapter 2

I will go in more detail now.

New NPC Dialogue

For Tiro Town, I have made it possible for the NPCs' dialogue to change depending on which part of the story the player is in. This means a lot of the gameplay and interactions will feel a lot more natural and have the opportunity to give the player more information as the game progresses. I really like this inclusion because I think it adds to the charm of the game.

New Character Sprites

I have created new character sprites for the next chapter in the game! As I've mentioned in previous devlogs regarding Toxic Trails, this chapter will introduce the main antagonist group of the game called the BINARY Organization. As such, these sprites are really just for those characters playing a role in the story.

The sprites would not have gone that well if not for GIF providing the base model for his sprites in his Character Package, so I want to give him a huge shout out.  Going over his sprite models and practicing on my own helped me to start to learn more about pixel art and it's complexities, and thus I was even more appreciative of the hard work GIF and others put in creating and making pixel art.

Since these designs are based off of the model GIF made in his own package, you CANNOT use the sprites that I've displayed here because I am not allowed to distribute his work to others even if it's for free. If you want a sprite package of your own, check out GIFs page for more information.

Battle Simulator

Because I was able to complete this in a somewhat short amount of time, I found myself working on the UI for the Battle Simulator. I think it's pretty good, but there is a lot of  UI elements that may be overloading to the player, so I want to have an option where some of the UI elements will be opaque until you hover the mouse toward it. I'm gonna play around with the designs and see what option I think would be the best for now.

New Goals

For this week, I want to create all of the city scenes for Toxic Trails. This will require me to actually write out the story for this chapter, design the cut scenes, and then actually make them using the new sprites I have created

Overall, I'm pretty happy with what I was able to accomplish last week. My game is starting to look like a legit game I can share with a much wider audience than my friends and family, and that makes me excited. Huge thank you to everyone watching the devlogs and supporting me on this journey. I hope to see you all next week.
