Guardians of RPG 1.02 Finally Released (v1.02 Update Report)

Hello everyone!

Just in case you missed the release, Guardians of RPG v1.02 has officially released! I'm proud of this version of the game due to all of the improvements in this version compared to v1.01. This tells me that I am improving as a indie game developer even if I don't get the most plays or the most views and because of that I am happy to share the results of this new version.

New Graphics

In the previous version, pixel art was rasterized, giving the game a blurry look go it. The environment, the people, and even some of the UI elements like the narration box looked really unpleasant as a result.

In the new update, pixel art is rendered correctly, and the images have HD quality go them. This includes not only the background art and people, but also the UI elements and Battle Scenes

New Maps

The new update has map redesigns for all old locations, and the inclusion of new maps for future chapters. These designs are more consistent and conducive to  enjoyable gameplay then the previous incarnation of the project.

New Ways to Play

You can now choose how you wish to interact with the story mid cut scene! Instead of linear cut scenes that make you click the next button until the scene is over, you are now asked to engage with the story in ways that can effect certain storylines and how you play the rest of the game.

More Battles

In the old version there were a total of 4 battles (one of which was optional) in the first Chapter. In this update, there will be over 10 battles that you can engage with in the first chapter alone, and plenty of battles you can engage with in chapter 2 as well. Fight scenes are dynamically created to spawn you in the right environment with the right number of allies and enemies.

Guardians of RPG Database

I have created a database that will store all of the items, quests, moves, story beats, characters, etc in a series of CSV files that the game can dynamically search through and instantiate at will. This allows for more flexible programming and takes up less memory space for more useful features.

Companion Feature

I have created a companion feature that allows for any NPCs in your party to track you and travel where you go throughout the story. It's still in it's beta stages, but it is very effective and promising feature.

Save Feature

I have created a way for you to save your progress in this game using the persistent data path. For WebGL, this means that project will restart your progress with every new update, but for those who download the game (to which I will make an Windows and iOS version soon) your progress will be permanently saved unless you delete it yourself.

New Music

There is new music in the game! Most of the music is triggered by actions, location changes and of course battling! There are tons more sounds and music that Guardians of RPG has and can't wait to have you listen to in the future.

Other Bugs

Major game breaking bugs have been rectified in the new update, including the following:

  • Fight scene soft locks
  • Glitches interacting with signs, players and other objects
  • Stair case clipping
  • And more

There's a lot that's been done over the last few months! That's one of the reasons why I'm so proud of this project. Be sure to check out the game and let me know what you think about it! I have a survey linked to the bottom of the game.

Short Hiatus

With that being said I do want to take a slight break from working on it to the degree that I have been. I want to focus on my mental and physical health, and there are other projects that I have that I also to take off the ground, which requires me to allocate time to them as well. I will still give weekly updates for any progress I've made with the game, but right now that's all I got for you today. Again huge shout out to everyone who's been supporting my journey up until this point. I can definitely feel and appreciate your love. I will see you all next week.
